Kerry and Tony’s wedding at the Atlantic Hotel, Newquay on Sunday 5th May 2013 with ‘Showgirl’, Lola.
Sunday 5th of May was a beautiful day in so many ways. Ask anyone privileged enough to take part or even witness Kerry and Tony’s wedding – it was ‘wall to wall’ fun and sun from the very start, writes Chauffeur Bob.
The ‘happy’ news making the papers on the day Kerry and Tony got married was the ‘understated’ celebrity wedding of Keira Knightley to rocker husband James Righton – apparently they drove off after the ceremony in a beaten-up Renault Clio!
Much closer to home, the pending visit of the Queen to St Ives was the hot topic.
Lola loves to party. You could say she really let her hair down today as she remained topless throughout!
Now, I’m a big music nut. To be more precise; I’m unashamedly, a ‘romantic’. I like all genres, as long as it has a melody that is. Although my lifelong passion is classical music and trying to play the piano, I did work for a number of years in the 80’s as a presenter and DJ for a well know national nightclub chain. It’s therefore not surprising that I love to feature music in and around the campervans – it really does raise the atmosphere. No doubt, as regular readers of our blogs and wedding show attendees would testify.
Some couples burn their own music onto a CD, many leave it to me. Love him or hate him, Michael ‘Marmite’ Buble remains a firm favourite – today was no exception. By popular request, one track in particular from his new album clearly hit the spot… ‘It’s a beautiful day’. Let’s say, after Sunday everyone knew the words, onlookers included!
Lola’s a big hit with the boys!
Our first port of call was a 12.45pm collection of the ‘boys’ from Mawgan Porth, a few miles east of the county’s surfing capital. Ahead of schedule, our arrival at the ‘Thorncliff’ didn’t go unnoticed. Barely before I had jumped out, Lola was encircled by wedding folk, always a good indicator that I have found the right address!
Introductions ensued; the main man, Tony, his best man, Nick, Ryan and Tony’s son, Daniel.
A few departure snaps later and the ‘roadshow’ got underway, our ultimate destination being Newquay’s Atlantic Hotel, the ceremony and reception venue.
First stop – the beautiful Porth Beach.
En-route the attention grabbing roadshow stopped at Porth Beach for a few poses. Our less glamorous penultimate stop was a Barclay’s ‘Hole in The Wall’, just in case Tony needed to buy some ice creams later in the day.
We arrived at the hotel just after 1.30pm in regal style and much acclaim. The red carpet was out to greet our VIP’s, the sun had its hat on and Mr. Buble was still swinging away.

During the ceremony, Lola received her usual oodles of attention. One passing couple from Australia said they’re definitely coming back here to get married in Lola.
I had time for a quick chat with the hotel’s friendly wedding and events coordinator, Lorraine Stones, who directed me to get a picture of the couple’s campervan Lola wedding cake.
Too good to eat – a Lola wedding cake topper!

About 60 minutes or so later, Lola was called round to the rear of, and onto, the hotel’s spectacular terrace with a vista to die for. Here the party was really getting into full swing. Lola immediately raised the temperature as guests flocked around her, posed with her and danced with her. I gave ‘Mr. Marmite’s’ vocal chords a rest for a few minutes and popped on another cool favourite, the ‘Ukuleles’ – it was absolutely magical, as you can see!
A fabulous party atmosphere erupts!
Amidst the mayhem, I found Kerry and Tony and remember saying, “if you want to go to Little Fistral for some photos, we’ll have to reclaim Lola first”.
Some time later we sent in the SAS in to recapture her. I lost count how many jumped in for our very last excursion of the day, but as well as Mr. and Mrs. Drinkwater, we were accompanied by bridesmaids Sam and Sani, best man Nick, family friend and acting photographer for the day, Jim, and finally a very smartly attired officer and gentleman.
A brief encounter with a Tuk-Tuk… Chicken Dhansak please!
A Klaxon chorus signalled our waving departure from the hotel. Just as we started down the hill, we passed an upward bound Tuk-Tuk, replete with mesmerised passengers – we paused for a quick chat and snap.
Minutes later we were ensconced on ‘Little Fistral’. Another wedding party had had the same idea but fortunately they were preparing to leave pretty much as we arrived.
Some lovely moments from Little Fistral Beach.
In near perfect conditions and for the next 40 minutes, some wonderful moments were encountered and captured in and around Lola, on the beach, not forgetting the ice cream van!
So that’s why we had to stop at the ‘hole in the wall’!
With time now pressing we all jumped aboard for the short hop back in time for the reception – a simply fabulous red-carpet welcome lay in wait. Everyone inside Lola was standing (excluding the Chauffeur!), cheering, screaming and waving. By special request, the volume was cranked up as one certain track played away… ‘it’s a beautiful day’ .
A fabulous end to a wonderful day!
Congratulations and best wishes to a really super couple and thank you for allowing us to share in so many of your wonderful moments x.
All photographs taken by Strawberry Leisure unless otherwise stated.
Today, Monday 20th May, a very thoughtful email arrived from Tony and Kerry…
We would like to thank Strawberry Leisure for making our wedding day a truly magical memorable occasion. Bob was wonderful even producing soft white fluffy towels for us when we came off the beach to wipe our feet he really does think of everything and nothing is too much trouble. Lola really stole the show and was hijacked by our guests as soon as she appeared at the back of the hotel, Bob cranked up the music and a fabulous party atmosphere erupted. We are so glad we had Lola & Bob to make our special day even more special, people have been talking about it non stop everybody loved our camper van. It is my first day back at work today as we have been on honeymoon and I have no photograps as yet so I have been logging on to Strawberry Leisure to show everyobe Bobs fabulous photograps & very articulate blog which we loved. Once again thank you so much it truly was the best idea we had to have Strawberry Leisure Lola & Bob involved in our wedding day.
